Data Collection Methods:
Why these Methods were selected:
How the data collections differentiates learning:
- Students took a pre- and post- reading comprehension test that evaluates non-fiction reading and narrative reading. This test will provide qualitative data on students growth over the course of the study.
- Students completed a Likert survey of their confidence with reading before and after the study, which will provide quantitative data on students perspectives.
- Students answered essay questions based on reading bi-weekly, which will be graded based on the district's language arts reading comprehension rubrics, which provides quantitative data of students growth throughout the study.
Why these Methods were selected:
- These data collection methods were selected to provide a variety of formats to track students growth.
- The pre- and post-test provide a summative look at overall growth.
- The likert survey provided a summative perspective into students overall perceptions.
- The essay answers provide formative quantitative data on students growth, so that the teacher can adjust strategies as needed. For example, the teacher can provide reading strategies to increase students comprehension based on specific areas they struggle to answer, such as questions on the theme of a text.
How the data collections differentiates learning:
- The likert scale on confidence of students provided insights into students perspectives on their own learning.
- The pre- and post- summative reading tests allow to see overall growth of students.
- The bi-weekly essay questions allowed the teacher to evaluate areas of growth and areas of concern for each student to adapt strategies throughout the study.
